The Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Authority (PPDA) has made significant strides in the development of a Sustainable Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Policy aimed at promoting environmentally responsible Public Procurement practices in Malawi.
Speaking during a stakeholder consultative meeting held in Lilongwe, PPDA Acting Director General Timothy Kalembo said the Authority had reached an important stage in the policy development process.
The meeting brought together representatives from various sectors to review and provide input on the first draft of the policy prepared by a consultant.
Kalembo, emphasized the importance of engaging stakeholders to ensure that the policy responds effectively to Malawi’s unique needs and priorities.
According to Kalembo, after conducting an internal review of the draft, the Authority found it necessary to seek broader stakeholder perspectives to enrich the document.
The proposed policy comes at a time when Malawi is advancing digital procurement through the Malawi National Electronic Procurement System (MANePS).
The development of the Sustainable Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Policy is aligned with Malawi Vision 2063, which envisages a clean, secure, and sustainable environment.
It also seeks to domesticate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production and Target 12.7, which promotes sustainable public procurement practices.
